What RTB means for Huañil

Chile's Environmental Assessment Service (SEA) approved the Environmental Qualification Resolution for the Huañil project, which will occupy 14.89 hectares in Quelen Alto, within the municipality of Salamanca. The approved scope includes a step-up substation and a high-voltage transmission line; the Huañil substation will raise system voltage from 33 kV to 220 kV, enabling interconnection with the SEN through a new line approximately 2.47 km in length.
Following the RTB milestone, Limes will focus on revenue structuring aligned with project finance requirements, while concurrently advancing strategic partnerships and power purchase agreement negotiations.
Limes' broader Chilean pipeline
Huañil is the lead project in a three-asset environmental approval run that Limes completed in under six months. Between November 2025 and April 2026, Limes received three environmental approvals in Chile: Pradera Larga (84 MWp solar PV plus 90 MW BESS), BESS Huañil (200 MW), and BESS Ganso (150 MW). Limes said that the Pradera Larga project and one standalone BESS in Chile would advance toward RTB "in the coming months."

Why Coquimbo, and why now
Chile's storage build-out is being driven by a structural curtailment problem. In 2025, renewable energy curtailment in Chile exceeded 6 TWh. ACERA estimates that without the battery storage already operational, curtailment would have reached 8 TWh - a 43% year-over-year increase rather than the actual 8% increase recorded. By December 2025, the country had 1.5 GW of operational BESS across 28 projects, 737 MW under testing, and nearly 6.8 GW under construction.
Chile's storage capacity target of 2 GW by 2030 was expected to be met during 2026, with a revised government projection of approximately 9,000 MW by 2027. Under Supreme Decree 70, grid operators pay a premium for guaranteed dispatchable power available during peak periods, and five-hour systems qualify for the top-tier capacity credit - a revenue layer that makes a project like Huañil, rated at exactly five hours of duration, directly eligible.
The Coquimbo region sits south of the heavily congested Antofagasta corridor where most operational Chilean BESS are concentrated, suggesting Limes is targeting a less saturated part of the grid where arbitrage spreads may remain wider for longer.
The immediate question is whether Limes can close project finance before competing RTB-stage projects lock up the available PPA counterparties and debt capacity. Other projects advancing in Chile include ContourGlobal, which has started construction at a 90 MW / 360 MWh BESS paired with a 131 MW solar project, and Verano Energy, which has selected Sungrow to supply BESS for its 152 MW / 606 MWh Observatorio project in O'Higgins. Limes' ability to move from RTB to financial close will be the next milestone to watch.
