Invinity Energy Systems has sold 43 MWh of vanadium flow battery systems to Dairyland Power Cooperative for deployment across long-duration energy storage (LDES) projects in the US Midwest, the companies announced on 3 August[1]. The deal is Invinity's largest single contract to date, surpassing a 32 MWh order for a California steel mill announced in June.
The REVIVE programme
The sale forms part of the Rural Energy Viability for Integrated Vital Energy (REVIVE) programme, a multi-site LDES initiative backed by the US Department of Energy's Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED)[1]. Dairyland was selected by the DOE to lead the programme, which Invinity first disclosed in September 2023.
The DOE cooperative agreement supporting the project is worth more than $28 million. Three sites will receive behind-the-meter battery storage systems:
- Frentress Lake, Ill. (served by JCE Co-op)
- Waukon, Iowa (served by Allamakee-Clayton Electric Cooperative)
- Wyeville, Wis. (served by Oakdale Electric Cooperative)
The batteries are specified to discharge at least 700 kW of electricity for at least 10 hours at each location. Two of the three sites previously hosted retired coal-fired power plants.
Why Dairyland chose Endurium
Dairyland supplies wholesale electricity to member-owned utilities serving communities across Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois. Dairyland said it selected Invinity's Endurium technology for its ability to perform long-duration charge/discharge cycles as demand and supply fluctuate. Invinity's US market delivery track record and field performance of existing assets were also key factors in the selection.
Endurium is configurable for discharge durations of 4 to 18 hours and scales from 10 MWh to 1 GWh, with no cycle limits and a rated lifespan of over 30 years. The platform carries no warranty restrictions on cycling frequency - a meaningful distinction from lithium-ion systems, which degrade under deep or frequent discharge.
Domestic content and the BABA waiver
The project required the DOE to seek a limited nonavailability waiver under the Build America, Buy America Act (BABA), allowing Dairyland to purchase Invinity's battery packs and containers, which do not currently meet domestic content requirements. Invinity expects to meet enhanced US domestic content requirements from 2026, which would affect future DOE-funded orders.
Invinity's North America order book
The Dairyland contract extends a run of US commercial wins for Invinity. In June, Invinity announced the sale of the largest VRFB system to date in North America - a 32 MWh project expected to be commissioned in 2027 in Kern County, California, at Pacific Steel Group's Mojave Micro Mill. In May, Invinity secured a contract to design a 1.5 GW / 2.1 GWh flow battery project being deployed alongside a data centre being developed by Swiss company FlexBase.
In November 2023, Invinity announced it would build and test a VRFB with a 24-hour discharge duration in a project launched by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), which would also provide techno-economic analysis for the REVIVE project.
Delivery of the Dairyland systems is expected to begin in late 2027. Additional project details are expected to be released by Dairyland following an announcement event later this summer. The key variable to track is whether the BABA waiver is finalised before procurement closes and whether Invinity's US manufacturing ramp meets the 2026 domestic content threshold it has publicly targeted.
